I did a post last week about green Valentine’s Day ideas, but didn’t even touch on kids.
Lynn responded with a suggestion to cut down on the number of paper valentines kids hand out to classmates on February 14th. She suggested that instead of each kid bringing in dozens of little cards for each classmate, the teacher have the kids draw names, make a valentine in class for that kid, and maybe make one for the teacher as well.
I think that’s a great idea, and it got me to start thinking about other Valentine’s Day ideas for kids.
This is an old standby, but how about making a coupon book (recycled paper of course!) for your child. You could give them a day without emptying or filling the dishwasher or a coupon to stay up late one night and play board games.
Make heart-shaped cookies and let the child help decorate them.
Make a homemade pizza and arrange the mushrooms, pepperonis or peppers in a heart shape.
Put grapes or other fruits in a heart shape on a plate for snack-time.
Help your child make valentine’s for his/her classmates. My mom did this with me one year, and of all my Valentine’s Day celebrations at school, that is the only one I remember.
Use cardboard from leftover cereal boxes and cut out heart shapes. Paint them red, white, pink, blue, green, or all of the above with non-toxic paints. And let the child write his/her own Happy Valentine’s Day message. I originally thought about newspaper, but I think it would be way too flimsy.
If you have extra fabric lying around, it would work as well.
Any other great ideas that I missed? My son is 2 this year and not that into the holiday. I think he’ll be all about it next year.
