Green ways to get your fashion fix

The economy’s recovering, but still not great. And even if your pocketbook isn’t feeling the pinch, buying new products that have been packaged and shipped thousands of miles isn’t all that green.

But there are several ways to update your closet, without shelling out lots of money for brand new clothes.

Goodwill

One of the first, and probably most popular, option is to hit up thrift and consignment stores in your area. If you’re into vintage, then this is a great option! But even if you’re not into vintage, you can usually find some current trends and lots of basics at these stores.

If you’re wanting to save lots of money, get to know your store’s schedule. Most have certain times of the month when they mark items down. Many consignment stores will drop the prices on items that have been in the store for a while.

These stores are also a great way for you to clear out your closets. Just make sure the clothes you are donating or consigning are clean and in good shape.

Craigslist and eBay

These websites are great for fashionistas on a budget. You can usually find some truly unique items at really great pricing. Many items are new, but there are also lots of lightly worn items available. I prefer Craigslist, because I don’t have to worry with shipping.

As with consigning, these are also great places to sell or give away items you no longer wear. I’ve had great success selling items on both sites, but with Craigslist I get to meet my customers.

Shop your friends’ closetsgreen_fashionThis is a lot of fun. I’ve done this with co-workers and friends. Simply gather the items you no longer wear or want (make sure they’re clean and in good shape) and get your friends to do the same. Then shop. One person’s “so last season” could become another’s “go to outfit.”

Of course, trying on the clothes is one of the best parts of these parties.

Money was not exchanged at my shop parties, we just kind of bargained and bartered. Two shirts for one dress, etc.

Tailoring

If you like your clothes, but they are feeling a little tight or loose, you might want to search out a good tailor. You can usually find good tailors at dry cleaners (I know, but you’re not getting your clothes dry cleaned, you’re just getting them altered with needle and thread) or major department stores. You can also search Craigslist or ask around your neighborhood.

And if you know how to sew, then you can make the alterations yourself. There are several places online that can offer advice and tips.
