Last week, my mother brought over a bag of Sun Chips for my son to snack on. While I wasn’t super thrilled with chips for a snack, I was intrigued by the very noisy bag that the chips came in.
On the label, it said the bag was compostable! How cool is that?
According to the website, the new Sun Chips bag should break down in an active compost bin in 14 weeks. It also says that the bag is noisier (in my opinion) because of the plant-based compounds used in making it.
With science as our excuse, we managed to eat our way through the bag very quickly. And we deposited the bag in our compost bin.
This is a great idea. I don’t think people are going to quit snacking. It’s just part of our culture now. But with packaging like this, maybe we won’t create quite as much waste.

Marketside brand organics has containers that are corn based which I think is grand but they won’t compost in a home-based compost pile or bin. It takes a lot more heat to break them down which is only available at commercial operations. There aren’t any recycling centers for them in my area. I reuse them but I’m getting a huge supply. Ideas?
